Patient Support: My Story | Patients

'THE FACE IS THE SOUL OF THE BODY'
                                                                                            Ludwig Wittgenstein

Our faces are the only part of our bodies we cannot truly hide. They make us unique and tell our stories, our emotions, our heritage and our experiences. As babies we react to the expressions on the faces of our parents, as adults we learn to read the language of the faces around us. At home, at work, at school, on the train, in the traffic, at the game – we tell our stories through our faces and read the stories of others.

Surgeons operating on a mouth cancer patientBut what if we do not want people to look at our faces - if we want to hide the scars, the lisp when we try to speak or the prominent chin that people stare at?

People suffer these and other consequences of facial diseases, injuries and disfigurement every day. In the United Kingdom alone 4,700 people develop oral cancer every year and 1,700 people die from this kind of cancer. Around 125,000 young people sustain serious facial injuries and 15,000 people receive treatment for facial disfigurement. Despite the severity of these issues, this remains a much neglected research area leaving thousands of  those unfortunate enough to be affected with little hope for the future.

The Facial Surgery Research Foundation - Saving Faces, is the only charity in the United Kingdom solely dedicated to the worldwide reduction of facial injuries and diseases. We are taking the lead in education and research to improve the physical and psychological treatment of all victims of oral cancer and other facial diseases.

We firmly believe that “Research Today Saves Faces tomorrow”.
